Slims-teacher-chalkboardThe mission of Slims Africa, Inc. is to provide funding and support to educate future Christian leaders in Sierra Leone, Africa. Our goal is to educate poor and orphaned children in Sierra Leone with a quality Christian education. Through creating awareness and providing financial support for SLIMS, lives can be dramatically impacted and leaders will emerge to positively shape Sierra Leone, Africa both now and in generations to come.

Sierra Leone International Mission School (SLIMS) was started in 1992 through the non-profit Atlanta International Fellowship (AIF). SLIMS now includes a primary (grade 1-6), junior secondary (grades 7-9) and senior secondary school (grades 10-12). SLIMS has a school in Wellington, a poor area on the outskirts of Freetown, Grafton, and Garoon. There are now approximately 4,200 students and 130 workers in all of these schools. Students are given the opportunity to learn about a personal relationship with Christ while receiving a quality education. Students assemble outside in the morning for devotional before attending classes. Christian organizations such as Upward Basketball and Young Life have partnered with SLIMS to further enhance the students opportunities to develop as Christian leaders.

Slims Africa will accomplish our mission by starting a grassroots fundraising effort, starting with our own Board members, to present SLIMS funding needs to individuals, churches, corporations, and foundations.  As friends and supporters of SLIMS, our efforts will be directly targeted at funding and enhancing the school, it’s students and it’s outreach. Whether through one-on-one conversation or a power point presentation to a corporation or foundation, we want to cast a vision for the difference people can make through as little as $150 (the cost to send one child to school for an entire year). We will encourage churches to sponsor SLIMS through organizing charity events or “adopting” a child in their Sunday School class, community group, or youth group.

Slims Africa will not only encourage adults to fund SLIMS, but we believe kids can help too through the Kids Helping Kids (KHK) program. This is where kids gather a group of friends under the supervision of an adult coach and form a team to send a kid (or kids) to school for a year. This encourages kids to become leaders, take responsibility, and learn about kids in another country. A KHK team can be a sports team, Brownie troop, youth group, or just a group of friends that want to make a difference. We will pursue opportunities to present the KHK program to schools, churches, and sports organizations. Slims Africa will also strive to bring awareness of funding needs for SLIMS through encouraging participation in mission trips to Sierra Leone. In April 2010 a team from Atlanta, GA spent 10 days serving the children at SLIMS in Wellington and Grafton. Slims Africa believes that nothing can replace the experience of investing personally in the lives of these children to understand the difference that a contribution, small or large, can make. We would like to partner with a local church each year to take a mission trip to Sierra Leone to learn, to serve, and then to return to help recruit financial partners to support SLIMS through Slims Africa.

As friends and financial supporters of SLIMS, Slims Africa desires to give each child in Sierra Leone an opportunity for a better life and a chance to succeed. Our vision is to impact entire communities, serving not only needy children, but reaching parents and families as well, giving them opportunities and hope for a brighter future. 100% of our time and resources will be to raise awareness and funds for SLIMS.
